I had my first flat tire on my iX today, and I wanted to share the experience in case it helps anyone else. It happened on the way home from a weekend trip, about 100 miles from home. Got a low tire pressure warning on the left rear tire, it was at 36 psi and dropping fast. I pulled into a rest area and found the culprit: a piece of metal, maybe part of a blade, had slashed the tire about 1.5 inches.
At first, I thought I could use a plug kit, but the slash was too wide for that. So I pulled out the BMW repair kit. Honestly, I was a bit skeptical, but it worked great! Here’s how it went:
Has anyone else used the BMW repair kit? Did your dealer recommend replacing the tire after a repair like this, or were you able to keep driving on it for a while?
At first, I thought I could use a plug kit, but the slash was too wide for that. So I pulled out the BMW repair kit. Honestly, I was a bit skeptical, but it worked great! Here’s how it went:
- Attached the sealant canister to the compressor, then the hose to the tire valve.
- Put the car in standby mode and started the compressor. It initially pumped air at high pressure to inject the sealant, then switched to regular mode to inflate the tire.
- Used the tire monitor in the car to track pressure and set it to 45 psi. Drove around the rest area a bit to make sure it was holding steady, then topped it up to 46 psi.
- I drove 120 miles back home with no issues, no noise, no further pressure loss. The kit worked perfectly for this kind of small slash, and it definitely saved my day.
